Blogs are designed to very easily create protected and private pages for personal use. In a sense, it’s like creating a simple or rudimentary membership area within your blog.

Protected pages are listed under the Pages Widget on the sidebar, but only those who have been invited can enter if they know the password.

Private pages are only visible to the Administrators who have access to the Dashboard, therefore allowing confidential information to be shared safely.

First, to create a password protected page, go to the dashboard (via your chosen method gleaned from the blogging e-course ‘Accessing your blog’) and create a page by clicking on Pages > Add New (see my blogging e-course Creating Pages on how to do this):

To create a password protected page, fill in your content details as normal:

Then your go to the Publish menu at the top of the right sidebar:

When you view your new page it will look like this:

Where you will see you have to use your password to gain access:

And voilà, now you’re allowed in to read its contents!

Note you are able to see the page listed under the Pages Widget in the right sidebar. It is not indicated that it is password protected, readers will only find out once they click on it. Those who have been invited and have been given its password will be able to go in and read its contents.

Administrators can check which pages are password protected when they go into Pages > Edit via the Dashboard; there you can see the status of each page:

Now, to create a private page, do the same thing by creating a new page with its contents:

Then go to the Publish menu at the top of the right sidebar:

If you click on Preview after you’ve published, you’ll be able to see your private page. That is the only way to check it, as it will not be accessible from the Homepage or any other pages via the Pages Widget on the right sidebar:

The Administrators can only access its contents via the Dashboard > Pages > Edit:

If you mouse over the page title the quick links Edit | Quick Edit | Delete | View appear, and View is the only way to gain access. That’s extremely secure and private!
