Guidelines in how to create a WordPress.com blog from scratch, up to getting a presence up on-line.

Review: “What I really like about what you have put together here is the mix of images from the website and then the explanation for each element. It is useful too to see each page in sequence: when you click here, this is the page you will see.” Helene Cooper

Once you’ve got your blog up, the next four stages are designed to help you develop your blog to its best potential:

Stage 1: Let’s get your blog up and running!

First blogging stage

Stage 1 will show you how to get your blog up and running. I will show you how to understand the dashboard (the main menu or hub of the blog) and to set it up to make your blog run efficiently. I will also give you a crash course on those dreaded ‘widgets’ that provide the activity on your sidebar, show you how to personalise your blog to make it truly yours, and how enter into your blog to create an entry or post.

Includes: Understanding the main dashboard | Setting the dashboard settings | What and how to use widgets | Editing the blogroll or links | Creating a blog’s visual identity | How to access a blog | Creating a username

Stage 2: Let’s start writing in your blog!

Second blogging stage

Stage 2 will show you how to write in your blog. A blog isn’t a blog unless it has content, so understanding the basics of creating a post (that is the entry or article you write in a blog) is shown here, including about what to add into your writing for the search engines, plus how to put in pictures, schedule your posts, manage your comments and create pages so your blog can become more informative.

Includes: Writing posts | Creating tags and categories | Putting in pictures | Placing images on the blogroll | Scheduling posts | Comment control | Creating pages | Adding contributors

Review: “I loved your ‘How to put a picture up on your blog’ tutorial.  A very clear, step-by-step guide that can take even the most basic novice and turn them into a mini-master.  I have in the past managed to upload a couple of images to my blog but in the future it will be even easier.  Making the image the correct size needed before uploading sounds like such a simple idea now that I have read it in your tutorial but I had never thought of it.  Thank you very much for putting this fantastic guide together and taking us all through the stages of a successful blog the easy way.”  Sue Wilson

Stage 3: Let’s get everyone to read your blog!

Third blogging stage

Stage 3 will show you how to interact with the rest of the internet. You need to publicise your blog, start making it more visible so more visitors get to read it, especially in social networking circles. Find out how to automatically publish your posts in Facebook and Twitter, how to set up a subscription service for your blog, and how to get newsletter subscribers from your blog.

Includes: Setting up RSS | Creating visual links | Advanced RSS to social media

Stage 4: Ready to advance your blog further?

Fourth blogging stage

Stage 4 is primarily to show you all the advanced areas of a blog should you wish to know them, like creating a rudimentary membership site or creating a new front page.

Includes: Writing protected and private posts | Creating protected and private pages | Creating a front or index page
