How to take away the comment boxes from your blog’s pages

Fairy Blog Mother: blogging help

Fairy Blog Mother

The fact that there are always default comment boxes in new pages has always bothered me, why are they there? Surely only posts should have comment boxes?

I suppose WordPress thought it would be good to have the possibility of commenting on a page’s content, but really it’s a pain as it looks terrible and most pages are created not to encourage comments – best leave that concept for the posts!

But now I have learned how to ‘turn them off’ in WordPress.com (and for technical folk how in WordPress.org) and as it’s so easy to do in the ‘free’ WordPress version, here’s how:

First, let’s look at a homepage with a comment box:

Now really you don’t want a comment box on your homepage, as it looks wrong. So let’s remove it. First, go to the Dashboard (see How to access a blog):

Go to ‘Pages’ in the left sidebar and click on ‘Pages’ below it:

When you mouse over the ‘Homepage’ link you’ll get an option called ‘Quick Edit’. Click on that:

Look for where it says ‘Allow Comments’ on the right side under ‘Default Template’ and click on it to turn it off:

Don’t forget to click ‘Update’. You’ll go back to the ‘Pages’ menu:

Click on ‘View’ to see your new Homepage:

There, doesn’t that look better without a comment box!

Now repeat the process for all the other pages where you don’t want a comment box, and enjoy a comment-box-on-pages-free blog!

Thank-you so much! I don’t understand why they don’t put this option into the main Page editor…

Thank you Alice, I don’t know why they don’t either. WordPress have their own agenda when it comes to blog design, and there are plenty of anomalies ready to confuse us!

I been looking for an answer to this question on how to remove the comment box on a page, as I am new to WordPress. I found out that this option is not available in other templates. As Alice said, maybe its better if WordPress put this option to remove comment box in the admin page.

Thank you Denver, but will WordPress take this idea up? There seem to be plenty of anomalies cropping up that need specialist treatment to solve them.

I have turned off the leave comments box as you described but I know have the comment ‘Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time’ Which is just as bad on a static page. Any way to get rid of this.

    Thanks
    JP

Thank you Jacqui for your comment. Unfortunately as your website and blog don’t use WordPress, I am unable to help you with your query.

Hi and thanks for sharing that.

Knew there must be such a setting but was making the ‘mistake’ of just looking on the ‘EDIT’ option rather than the ‘QUICK EDIT’ – I mean, why would you only increase the options on the ‘QUICK EDIT’ option????

I’m sure they meant well… or perhaps they were just having a laugh?

    All sorted now.

I have the same issue as Jacqui There is now 2 lines showing:

    Comments Off | Edit
    Comments are closed.

I’m surprised her posting was ignored

    Dear Toni
As I said in my response to Jacqui, her website and blog were not WordPress, therefore I am unable to provide an answer to your problem. I have searched the new version of WordPress.com for a similar problem, but have found no incident to report.
