Helpful tips for new bloggers

A collaborative post by Carol Trehearn.

Blogging is a brilliant way to express yourself, share your opinions with the world, connect with like-minded people, and keep busy. This can also be an effective way to make money too if you wish.

It’s no surprise that so many people show an interest in blogging, yet many hesitate because they have anxieties about sharing content on the internet and how to get started.

It is perfectly understandable to be anxious, but with a few helpful tips, you should be able to start blogging with confidence and enjoy all the benefits that this great hobby offers.

Read on to find out more.

Choose topics you are passionate about

The first of your helpful tips is it’s important to have a passion for the content you write about, as otherwise you will not enjoy it, and this can come across in your posts.

Think about areas where you have an interest or specialist knowledge in. This could be anything, but a few options include:

  • Fashion
  • Technology
  • Sports
  • Cooking
  • Lifestyle
  • Fitness
  • Parenting

Design a high-quality website

A high-quality website stops people from leaving your site simply because of how it looks and functions. Choose a host with a free website builder, like Krystal, who make it easy to design a professional standard website without any skills.

The website should be:

  • Attractive
  • Easy to navigate
  • Free from clutter
  • Relevant
  • Engaging

Use a variety of media

Even if you are writing about a topic of great interest, your readers will find it hard to finish the post if it is just one giant wall of text.

Add visual interest to your posts with high-quality photographs, drawings, animation or video. Use a variety of media to keep your blog posts engaging, and you can use this to portray your personality.

Encourage conversation and engage readers

It’s not much fun blogging without any feedback. Try to spark a conversation by engaging with your readers. Write thoughtful posts with a conversational style, ask questions and share an opinion.

Definitely read all of the comments you get, and respond where appropriate. People are much more likely to revisit a blog if there is an interesting dialogue going on with the writer and other readers.

Avoid controversy

Although you will want to encourage conversation and debate, it’s best to avoid controversy and polarising subject matter. The internet can be a strange and nasty place, so make sure you are sensible and safe when you write your content.

Additionally, all your content should be your own. Give credit where it is due if you have taken inspiration or quotes from other sources. Plagiarism is not tolerated within the blogosphere.

Have these helpful tips been helpful?

Hopefully, these helpful tips will give you the confidence that you need to start blogging.

It can be intimidating at first, but once you have your site up and running and you have a few posts under your belt, you will soon start thoroughly enjoying writing and sharing content on your chosen theme.

It is then a case of writing consistently to grow your readership, and possibly monetising it in the future if you want to go down this path.
